Happy Halloween!
From the time I was old enough to participate in Halloween I think back to its many eras that I used to enjoy beginning with childhood up until the present. I used to love Halloween as a child. I remember dressing up for Halloween parties at school.
I recall going out trick or treating. Trick or treating at my Nan’s house was always the best part of Halloween. She always gave her grandkids a bag of treats which included a can of pop, a regular sized bag of chips, and a regular sized chocolate bar, while she passed out tiny sized candies to the neighborhood kids.
When I got a little older, I took my younger sister trick or treating. I still enjoyed Halloween as a teenager, though I was deemed too old to trick or treat, I enjoyed it in whatever ways that I could. I loved to dress up when taking my sister trick or treating. I also loved handing out treats to the kids who came to our door. I do recollect a few trick or treaters who were borderline too old to be trolling for treats; however, I neither judged nor denied them treats.
During university years I recall dressing up to attend house parties as well as going to bars to consume colored Jell-O shots and dance to Halloween themed music in which Thriller was part of the DJ play list. Halloween nights as a university student were much different from when I was a child.
After university I entered the work force full time. I worked many Halloween nights; therefore, was unable to participate in parties. I lived in apartment buildings; therefore, handing out candies to other people’s children was eliminated. It didn’t take too many missed festivities to make me realize that Halloween was more fun when I was a child.
Now that I am in my 40’s I realize that I still love Halloween. It doesn’t have to be the same as when I was a child for me to still consider it fun. I love Halloween decorations, Halloween candy, Halloween costumes, Halloween themed music, carving pumpkins, scary movies, and ghost stories. I used to have the notion that I was too old to love that stuff.
I have since changed my ways of thinking and will never be too old to enjoy anything that I used to from my childhood. I can continue to appreciate my favorite day of the year as much, or even more so than I did as a child. I will never become too old for Halloween.
Do you still enjoy Halloween as an adult? What aspects of Halloween do you enjoy the most?
